Research and practice development project

Enabling social participation of adolescents in residential educational support in times of pandemics (JuPa)

Term: 01.02.2023 - 01.02.2026

The project aims to systematically reconstruct the effects of the corona crisis on participation and developmental conditions as well as educational disadvantages of children and adolescents in inpatient youth welfare settings both from the perspective of the adolescents themselves and of youth welfare professionals. The project thus closes a central research gap.

Based on a contrast of both perspectives, quality criteria for the promotion of social participation of addressees and concepts for the compensation of disadvantages resulting from the Corona crisis will be developed. The focus is on four relevant fields of socialization of children and adolescents, which are also important fields of cooperation for youth welfare professionals: School/education, family of origin, peers/peers and welfare state systems (youth welfare system, health care system). The results will be published in the form of a handout for professionals with quality criteria for the promotion of social participation and concepts of targeted support options with regard to the aforementioned fields of socialization. Data collection will be carried out in the form of guided interviews (n=40 young people) and a standardized questionnaire survey (n=400 youth welfare professionals). Qualitative and quantitative methods are used for the evaluation.

The development of concepts is carried out with the help of participatory procedures in which the relevant groups of actors are involved: Children/adolescents, parents, teachers, youth welfare professionals. On the one hand, the project pursues well-founded basic research (with regard to research on disadvantages of children and adolescents in residential groups, childcare centers and foster families) and, on the other hand, provides innovative and practical concepts.
