Teacher Training for Vocational Colleges (Berufskollegs) (LABG): Social Pedagogy
The degree programme Teacher Training for Vocational Colleges / Subject Social Pedagogy provides students with a subject-specific and methodological introduction to social pedagogy, as well as insights into the historical and systematic foundations of the discipline. In addition, students are introduced to methodological and practical competencies relevant to fields of social-pedagogical practice.
The programme focuses in particular on the foundations of early childhood education as well as child and youth welfare. It also addresses theories, research approaches and concepts in social pedagogy. As part of subject-specific didactics courses, students also learn methodological and didactic principles of teaching social-pedagogical topics.
Qualification Aims
Studying Social Pedagogy qualifies graduates for teaching at vocational colleges (Berufskollegs). The Bachelor’s degree is an academic qualification that also enables graduates to leave university and pursue professional employment in fields of social work.
The subsequent Master’s degree programme explicitly prepares students for teaching at vocational colleges. Successful completion of the Master’s degree also grants access to the 18-month teacher training preparatory service (Referendariat), and subsequently enables graduates to enter the school service as teachers.
Possible future fields of employment include the full range of public vocational education. Graduates may teach at different types of Berufskollegs, including Berufsschulen, Berufsfachschulen, Höhere Berufsfachschulen, Fachoberschulen, Berufliche Gymnasien and Fachschulen.

Subject-Related Practical Training
The 52-week subject-related practical training (Fachpraktische Tätigkeit) is mandatory for all students in teacher training programmes for vocational colleges. Its purpose is to give students insight into the professional fields of the students they will later teach, thereby linking the theoretical knowledge acquired during their studies with professional practice.
Subject-related practical training must generally be completed if the student does not already hold a relevant vocational qualification. This applies regardless of the examination regulations, including LPO, the Bachelor’s/Master’s pilot model and Bachelor’s/Master’s programmes according to LABG 2009. Students may also complete subject-related practical training as part of internships abroad.
Final recognition of all completed subject-related practical training is granted by the State Examination Office.
