At first glance, what is meant by educational research seems sufficiently clear. However, uncertainties arise at the latest when trying to define and describe this field of research more precisely. The term educational research proves to be no less controversial than the term education itself. In the discussion, educational research often functions as a kind of umbrella term, with which a research profile is marked that is supposed to make it possible to empirically record educational processes in schools, especially those related to teaching, and to define competencies to be acquired by pupils and to evaluate them with the help of quantitative methods. Within the framework of other research traditions, there is a critical distance to this understanding of educational research, which is all too limited in terms of content and methodology. They point out that educational processes do not only take place in school contexts and in classroom scenarios. Moreover, education should not be conceptually limited to the acquisition of pre-classified competences and sorted into domains, and methodological approaches to educational processes should be disregarded or marginalised, which research educational processes primarily with the help of qualitative-reconstructive methods.

The conference will focus on educational approaches and contributions to educational research and related disciplinary perspectives and research methodological issues. Based on recent debates on educational research and projects at the TU Dortmund University, topics, contexts and methodological designs of educational research will be presented and discussed.
